About Tang Jingling

On May 16, 2014, rights lawyer Tang Jingling was taken away from his home by the police. He was criminally detained for alleged “picking quarrels and provoking troubles.” The police also took away two computers, three cell phones and a camera from his home. On the same day, Yuan Xinting and Wang Qingying were also arrested and their home searched by the police. Currently, these three people are detained in Baiyun Detention Center in Guangzhou. The police beat up Wang Qingying and threatened his family while searching Wang’s home. Tang was kicked and beaten in the detention center.

After Tang was criminally detained, his lawyer Liu Zhengqing met him twice after six repeated attempts. During the second meeting, Tang told his lawyer that the main reason that he was detained was that he campaigned for the “June 4th Meditation,” as part of the civil disobedience movement he has been promoting, during the time of the 25th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Massacre. The activities of the civil disobedience movement Tang promotes include: “April 29 Lin Zhao Memorial Day,” “Citizen Heart Postcard Event”, “583 Action,” “Abolish Household Registration Segregation,” “Universal pension benefits” and promoting academic studies of nonviolent resistance -- all of which are not tolerated by the authorities

Tang Jingling is the initiator and key campaigner for the civil disobedience movement, through which he hopes to bring democracy and freedom to China. The main activities of the civil disobedience movement he designed include:

Reclaim ballot papers (Refuse  to vote in unfair elections)
Vaccination safety and forced hospitalization of mental patients
June 4th Meditation (commemorate Tiananmen Massacre by  meditation)
April  29 Lin Zhao Memorial Day (Commemorate Lin Zhao’s death anniversary  together at her grave)
Citizen  Heart Postcard (mail postcards to political prisoners);
The End of Tyranny Countdown (assume the collapse of the Chinese  dictatorship will happen in 10 years, and count down from then
Freedom and Democracy T-shirts Action (print slogans about freedom and democracy  on T-shirts)
583 Action (demand a minimum wage of  Rmb 3,000 for all workers for an eight-hour work day and five-days work week)
Universal Pension Benefits Reforms
Abolish Household  Registration Segregation

Tang Jingling was born in 1971 in Jingzhou City, Hubei Province. After graduating from Shanghai Jiaotong University with a degree in polymer materials engineering in 1993, he worked in Shantou, Guangdong Province. In 1998, Tang started to practice law in Guangzhou. Tang cares deeply about social issues and participated in various movements. For example, he signed the petition calling on an investigation of college student Sun Zhigang’s death. He was among the first who signed Charter 08. He was the defense lawyer for the two persons charged in the Xing’ang labor unrest case in Dongguan. He was one of the key lawyers in the case of Taishi villagers’ campaign to remove village officials. He also participated in the vaccine lawsuit and helped parents to establish a vaccine safety mechanism. In 2012, he took part in the investigation of Li Wangyang’s death. In the past decade, Tang has been providing pro bono services to numerous human rights cases. He has been unemployed since authorities suspended his lawyer’s license. He made a living by providing legal advice and translation. In February, 2011, during tthe “Chinese Jasmine Revolution,” Tang was accused of “inciting the subversion of state power” and was kept in a black jail. During his detention, he was threatened, terrorized and tortured. He was deprived of sleep for 10 days. His hands became numb, his body was suffering from continuous trembling and his heart suffered serious complications. It wasn’t until he was in critical condition did the police allow him one or two hours of sleep a day. He was released on August 2, 2011 and his case was closed. During Tang’s detention in March, 2011, his wife Wang Yanfang went missing. Later, she was put under house arrest, being watched around the clock, until Tang was released.

In the past decade, because of his participation in various civil rights cases and his activism in promoting civil disobedience, Tang’s lawyer’s license was suspended and he’s been put under house arrest, kidnapped and detained. His wife also lost her job and has been harassed and detained. Both Tang and his wife are Christians.
